Patrick Oliver - Photographer

At 15 I was presented with a unique opportunity for a young student. A group from our class was going to Germany! My father gave me one of the greatest gifts I had ever received: a new camera to document this trip. It was a life changing experience in more ways than one. I was excited and optimistically packed six rolls of film - this was going to be great. I truly underestimated what the pull of photography combined with beautiful art, architecture, and my bandmate travelers would ultimately have on me. I ended up shooting 20 full rolls of film on that trip.

That experience lit a fire that has only grown over time. When my partner and I started Fearless Radio in Chicago, I discovered a goldmine of subjects for my photographic passion. Solo performers, interviewees, live shows all presented themselves as subjects for my art passion: I photographed people. People in color, people in black and white, people very still and thoughtful, and people bouncing around various Chicagoland places and stages.

FearlessRadio broadcast for more than a decade and while it was ending a chapter for me, a new chapter was ready to be written. My family and I made the decision to take our show on the road and explore places we’d never seen before. We bought an old bus, loaded up ourselves, our dog, and as much equipment as we could carry and headed south. The bus took us over 40K miles, from familiar places to states we’d never been to before. I can’t even say how many cameras I went through documenting our journeys and the people we met along the way.

New ideas formed as we traveled those miles. The southwest inspires with its breathtaking scenery, incredible skies, wildlife galore, and the faces of the folks who work and travel this land. My vision and desire turned toward creating artwork in the desert.

I have found a homebase in Sierra County, New Mexico and have the Vagabond studio in Truth or Consequences. I have been working with new mediums for my photography and am excited to be able to take my original vision from the camera through the entire process of creation. I invite you to enjoy my art, my travel photography, and some of the people I’ve met and photographed along the way.
